Commercial general liability (CGL) insurance covers a business against third-party claims for bodily injury, property damage, and personal or advertising injury arising from its operations. It's the foundational liability coverage most contracts require, protecting against everyday risks, a customer slip-and-fall, damage caused on a job site, and similar claims.

Why it matters: General liability is the coverage you'll verify most often. Knowing its standard limits and what it does (and doesn't) include helps you set requirements that match the risk a partner brings.

Workers' compensation insurance covers medical costs and lost wages for employees who are injured or become ill on the job. It's mandated by law in most states for businesses with employees and typically includes employer's liability coverage for related lawsuits.

Why it matters:  Requiring workers' comp from partners protects you from being pulled into a claim when their employee is hurt on your property or project. Verifying it is often a legal as well as a contractual obligation.

Commercial auto liability insurance covers bodily injury and property damage caused by vehicles a business owns, leases, or uses for work. It's distinct from personal auto coverage and is essential for any partner whose work involves driving, deliveries, service calls, hauling, or transporting equipment.

Why it matters:   If a partner's vehicle is part of the work they do for you, confirming commercial auto coverage closes a gap that general liability won't fill.

Umbrella or excess liability insurance provides an additional layer of coverage that activates once an underlying policy's limits are exhausted. Excess liability extends the limit of a specific policy, while umbrella coverage can sit over several policies at once, such as general liability and auto.

Why it matters: When a contract requires high limits, say, $5 million, a partner often meets them by stacking an umbrella policy on top of a primary one. Reading both together confirms the total limit actually reaches your requirement.

Professional liability insurance, also called errors and omissions (E&O), covers claims that a business's professional advice or services caused a client financial harm. It applies to service providers, consultants, architects, accountants, agencies, where the risk is a mistake or oversight rather than physical injury or property damage.

Why it matters: General liability won't cover a faulty design or bad advice. For partners whose product is their expertise, professional liability is the coverage that matters most, and the one often missed on a quick review.

Pollution liability insurance covers claims and cleanup costs arising from the release of pollutants or hazardous materials caused by a business's operations. Standard general liability policies typically exclude pollution, so this coverage fills a gap that's critical for contractors working with chemicals, fuel, waste, or environmental remediation

Why it matters: On construction and industrial projects especially, a pollution exclusion in the general liability policy can leave a major risk uncovered. Verifying separate pollution coverage matters whenever work touches hazardous materials

Cyber liability insurance covers losses from data breaches, cyber attacks, and other technology-related incidents, including the costs of notification, recovery, and resulting claims. Why it matters: As more partners handle sensitive data on your behalf, cyber coverage is increasingly written into compliance requirements, particularly for technology, payment, and data-processing partners.

Builder's risk insurance covers property damage to a structure while it is under construction, including materials and equipment on site. It's a temporary policy that lasts for the duration of a project and typically ends when construction is complete and the building is occupied or sold.

Why it matters: On construction projects, builder's risk protects the work itself. Tracking it means watching project-length policies that expire on a timeline different from a partner's annual liability coverage.

Completed operations coverage, part of a general liability policy, protects against claims for bodily injury or property damage that occur after a job is finished. It covers situations where faulty work causes harm later, for example, a deck that collapses months after a contractor completes it.

Why it matters:  For construction and trade partners, products-completed operations coverage is often required to extend well past project completion. Confirming it protects you from claims that surface long after the work is done.

Products liability coverage protects a business against claims that a product it made, sold, or distributed caused injury or property damage. It's often bundled with general liability as “products-completed operations” and is essential for manufacturers, distributors, and retailers.

Why it matters:  If a partner supplies goods that end up in your operations or your customers' hands, products liability coverage determines who absorbs a claim when something goes wrong.

Bodily injury is a category of liability coverage for physical harm such as injury, sickness, or death that a business becomes liable for. It's one of the two core components of general liability, alongside property damage.

Why it matters:  Knowing what bodily injury coverage includes helps you read general liability limits and judge whether they match the physical risk a partner's work creates.

Property damage is a category of liability coverage for physical injury to, or loss of use of, tangible property belonging to others. Like bodily injury, it's a core component of general liability coverage.

Why it matters:  Property damage coverage answers for harm a partner causes to physical things, equipment, buildings, inventory. It's central to most general liability requirements.

Personal and advertising injury is a general liability coverage for non-physical harms such as libel, slander, copyright infringement in advertising, and wrongful eviction. It protects against reputational and certain intangible harms rather than physical injury or property damage.

Why it matters:  This coverage rarely gets attention on a quick review, but it can matter for partners whose work involves marketing, media, or tenant relationships.

Policy limits, or limits of liability, are the maximum amounts an insurer will pay under a policy for a covered claim or over a policy period. Limits are usually expressed as a per-occurrence amount and an aggregate amount, the most payable for a single event and the most payable in total during the policy term.

Why it matters:  Setting and verifying limits is the heart of insurance requirements. A partner can carry the right coverage types but still fall short if their limits don't match the risk of the work they do for you.

A per-occurrence limit is the maximum an insurer will pay for any single claim or event under a policy. It resets for each separate occurrence, but only up to the policy's overall aggregate limit.

Why it matters: When you require, say, $1 million per occurrence, you're setting the ceiling for any one incident. Reading this figure correctly tells you how much protection a single claim actually carries.

An aggregate limit is the maximum an insurer will pay in total for all covered claims during a policy period. Once the aggregate is exhausted, the policy stops responding, even if individual claims fall within the per-occurrence limit.

Why it matters: A partner with several claims in a year may have a healthy per-occurrence limit but a nearly depleted aggregate. Understanding the difference helps you judge whether real coverage remains.

A per-project aggregate is an endorsement that provides a separate aggregate limit for each project, rather than one shared aggregate across all of a policyholder's work. Without it, claims on one project can erode the limits available to another.

Why it matters:  On large or multi-site work, requiring a per-project aggregate ensures one busy project doesn't drain the coverage protecting the rest.

A deductible is the amount a policyholder must pay out of pocket on a covered claim before the insurer begins to pay. Higher deductibles usually mean lower premiums, shifting more of the initial cost to the policyholder.

Why it matters:  A very high deductible can signal that a partner would absorb a large share of a loss themselves, worth noting when you assess whether their coverage is meaningful for the risk involved.

A self-insured retention (SIR) is an amount a policyholder agrees to pay on a claim before insurance coverage applies, similar to a deductible but handled differently. Unlike a deductible, with an SIR the policyholder typically manages and pays the claim directly up to the retention amount before the insurer steps in.

Why it matters:   A large SIR means a partner is self-funding the first layer of losses. For high-value work, it's worth confirming they have the financial strength to actually cover that retention.

Claims-made and occurrence describe two ways a liability policy decides whether a claim is covered: an occurrence policy covers incidents that happen during the policy period, while a claims-made policy covers claims first reported during the policy period. Occurrence coverage responds based on when the event happened; claims-made responds based on when the claim is filed, regardless of when the event occurred.

Why it matters:  The distinction matters for partners whose work can surface problems years later. A claims-made policy can leave a gap once it ends unless extended coverage is in place.

A combined single limit (CSL) is a single maximum payout that applies jointly to bodily injury and property damage from one claim, rather than separate limits for each. It's most common in commercial auto policies, offering flexibility because the full limit is available for either type of loss.

Why it matters:  When a certificate shows a combined single limit, the whole amount can go toward whatever the claim requires, useful to recognize when comparing it against split-limit requirements.

An insurance premium is the amount a policyholder pays an insurer for coverage, usually annually or in installments. Premiums reflect the insurer's assessment of risk, higher risk generally means a higher premium.

Why it matters:  Premiums rarely appear on certificates, but understanding them explains partner behavior, like resistance to adding coverage that raises their cost.

COI tracking is the ongoing process of collecting, verifying, and monitoring certificates of insurance to confirm that partners maintain the coverage you require. It spans the full lifecycle: requesting certificates, checking them against requirements, watching expiration dates, and following up when something lapses or falls short.

Why it matters:  Done in spreadsheets, COI tracking is slow and easy to let slip. The work isn't just collecting documents, it's continuously confirming that coverage is still in force and still meets your requirements.

Insurance requirements are the specific coverage types, limits, and endorsements a business requires its partners to carry, usually defined in a contract. They translate a company's risk tolerance into concrete terms, for example, $1 million general liability, additional insured status, and a waiver of subrogation.

A loss run is a report from an insurer detailing a policyholder's claims history over a set period. It shows past claims, their status, and amounts paid, giving a picture of how often and how heavily a partner has drawn on their coverage.

Why it matters:  For higher-risk partnerships, a loss run reveals patterns a certificate can't. A history of frequent claims may signal risk worth weighing before work begins.

Risk transfer is the practice of shifting the financial responsibility for a potential loss from one party to another, most often through insurance and contracts. Requiring a partner to carry coverage and name you as additional insured is risk transfer in action, moving the cost of certain losses onto their policy.

Why it matters:  Every insurance requirement you set is a form of risk transfer. Understanding the goal, keeping a loss where it belongs, helps you set requirements that actually accomplish it.

Contractual risk transfer is the use of contract language, such as indemnification clauses and insurance requirements, to assign responsibility for losses to another party. It pairs the legal promise (the contract) with the financial backing (insurance) so the party best positioned to manage a risk also bears its cost.

Why it matters:  Contractual risk transfer only works when the contract terms and the insurance coverage line up. Reviewing both together is what makes the transfer enforceable instead of theoretical.

Pre-qualification is the process of verifying a partner meets your insurance and compliance requirements before they begin work. It front-loads the compliance check, confirming coverage is in place at onboarding rather than discovering a gap mid-project.

Why it matters:  Catching a coverage shortfall before work starts is far easier than fixing it after. Pre-qualification turns compliance into a gate rather than a scramble.

Insurance verification is the act of confirming that a certificate's coverage is genuine, current, and meets the stated requirements. It goes beyond receiving a document, verification checks limits, dates, endorsements, and the carrier behind them.

Why it matters:  A certificate on file isn't proof of anything until it's verified. Verification is where compliance actually happens.

A compliance audit is a periodic review of all partner certificates to confirm coverage remains current and complete across a portfolio. Audits catch expired, missing, or deficient certificates that may have slipped through day-to-day tracking.

Why it matters:  Even with good tracking, a portfolio drifts out of compliance over time. Regular audits surface the gaps before they're discovered the hard way.

A certificate request is a formal ask to a partner or their broker to provide proof of required insurance coverage. It typically specifies the exact coverages, limits, and endorsements the partner must document.

Why it matters:  A clear, specific request is what gets a usable certificate back the first time, vague requests lead to rounds of back-and-forth.

The policy period is the span of time during which an insurance policy is active, defined by its effective and expiration dates. Coverage applies only to events (or claims, for claims-made policies) that fall within this window.

Why it matters:  The policy period is what every renewal reminder protects. A partner is only compliant while you're inside a current, verified policy period.
